    Step #1

Set the foundation for your health and mental well being.  YOUR CANCER KICKING POWER LIES FROM WITHIN YOU!

We are spiritual beings with a spirit, soul( your will, mind and emotions)  and physical body.  If we focus only on trying to get our physical selves more healthy, we will come short in achieving those goals since there is mind -body connection.

“In  mind-body medicine, the mind and body are not seen as separately functioning entities, but as  one functioning unit.  The mind and emotions are viewed as influencing the body, as the body, in  turn influences the mind and emotions, “ -Selhub (2007)

For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.   Proverbs 23:7

“If you can believe it, you can achieve it” , Mohit Gupta

3 Ways to Set the Foundation: Your Mind First

    1. Writing in a Gratitude Journal~ did you know that keeping a daily gratitude journal has so many benefits for us, spiritual beings.  Recent research has shown that journaling your gratitude consistently can get our minds off of our problems and focused on something positive in our lives, which can lead to better sleep, improve our stress levels, lowering symptoms of depression and may even lead us to eat more healthy.
    2. Writing down and then Saying Positive Declarations~ this doesn’t mean  that we are denying difficult circumstances which cancer will inevitably  bring nor does it mean to  deny our feelings during these challenges.  Rather,  we are reframing our thoughts from negative into more encouraging thoughts. Some examples for me would be:
“ I am strong enough to handle what’s happening to me right now. This situation is difficult, but I have the skills and abilities to deal with it.”
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13 Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. -Isaiah 41:10
    3. Exercising Mindfulness and Prayer~studies show that breast cancer survivorship may improve with doing a dedicated mindfulness practice. Most people, if they do not have a relationship with God before a cancer diagnosis,  develop a more prayerful life when dealing with cancer.   Studies show also that prayer and having spirituality lends itself to better immune response and possible longer survival rates, experiencing  generally more peace and joy in their lives. Here are some ways to incorporate a simple mindful and prayer practice :
    • Take a prayer walk in nature.  Just talking to God about your feelings, expressing gratitude for this moment can yield much peace and enjoyment. Try to do this daily, if possible. You will start to feel stronger psychologically as well as physically. This could be a time of speaking your positive affirmations as well.  We probably never knew how powerful a walk could be until we begin to be intentional about strengthening our mental health.
    • Here is a short Mindfulness practice you can implement into your life right now:  Let’s practice Box Breathing but we are going to combine this with visualization techniques:  this entails breathing in holding it for 4 seconds, breathing out and holding for 4 seconds, breathing in and holding it for 4 seconds, then breathing out and holding it 4 seconds.

    Step #2

Time to Fuel Your Body With Cancer Kicking Powerful Nutrition

The CANCER KICKING POWER of food, aka as “Green Chemoprevention”, has been studied extensively.  Especially plant foods contain phytonutrients which act as chemicals that protect the plant from invaders but offer amazing antioxidants for us who consume them.  There are different types of phytonutrients that range from boosting immune system function, decreasing inflammation in the body to reducing tumors from spreading or even cause tumor cell apoptosis ( cell death). Healthy food fuel can make cancer unwelcome in our bodies and act as our natural pharmacy.  The more color you can create on your plate, the better!

    Step #3

Let’s Get Moving! UNLEASH YOUR CANCER KICKING POWER!

Many researchers have found that exercise has a profound effect on breast cancer markers, particularly combining aerobic and strength resistance exercise. Let me show you how we can make cancer want to leave when we exercise:

    • Blood sugar is regulated (cancer loves sugar)
    • Saturates our tissues with oxygen (cancer hates oxygen!)
    • Optimizes our immunity
    • Strengthens our bones, muscles and helps to maintain healthy body weight
    • Improves our mental health by releasing endorphins or feel good hormones !
    • Shown to inhibit tumor growth and cancer recurrence !

    Step #4

Intermittent Fasting from sun up to sun down! REBOOT YOUR IMMUNE CANCER KICKING POWER SYSTEM

with about 14 hours of fasting, have shown in studies to have an anti-cancer effect and anti-Alzheimer’s disease!

    • This study showed participants experienced weight loss and did not restrict calories in their diets.
    • It is promoted by well respected cancer expert, Dr. Valter Longo, PhD.

    Step #5

Get Quality Rest 7-9 hours and  Restore!

Women who have had breast cancer tend to not sleep as well as before they had treatment. Stress can keep us up at night too, so all the more it is important to mitigate stress, lower blood pressure, and mood swings  by doing consistent exercise and mindfulness techniques.

Tips for getting a good night’s sleep:

    • Keep your bedroom cool!
    • Limit or omit alcohol or excess sugar hours before your bedtime
    • Limit your screen time ( tv, phone, computer) at least half an hour before bedtime.
    • Put your electronics on do not disturb and/or sleep mode
    • Try to exercise earlier in the day
    • Maintain the same bedtime and wake time
    • Think about adopting a bed time sleep story app.  I like the Abide app.

    Step #6

Want to be your best CANCER KICKING POWER self?  Get into Community!

Dr. Emma Seppala, a community impact researcher from Stanford Medicine tells us that feeding our need to be socially connected  is extremely important to our health! Being around people who we connect to has been shown to decrease  anxiety and depression and even strengthens  our immune system!

    • Get into a church and volunteer in an area that sounds like fun!
    • Recruit a friend to walk with you
    • Volunteer at a women’s or animal shelter

    Step #7

Work Your CANCER KICKING POWER FOR OTHERS and Go out and Serve!

A double dose of goodness for your heart and soul!
Our brain does a happy dance when we serve others ! We respond psychologically  with endorphins and pow! Our immune system responds positively too! Joy meets purpose! Here are some ideas!

    • Go walk an elderly person’s dog for them or run errands, grocery, whatever they need.
    • Help a friend in need.  Your problems will melt away…
    • Hold open a door, offer a smile or a kind word.  Never know when someone will need a good dose of kindness and it’ll do your heart kind too.
