  • Schedule and Keep Regular Appointments: Work with your healthcare team to create a follow-up care plan that includes regular check-ups, mammograms, and other necessary screenings. Sticking to this plan can give you peace of mind and catch any potential issues early.
  • Communicate Openly with Your Healthcare Team: Don’t hesitate to discuss your fears and anxieties with your doctor.   • Maintain a Balanced Diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, including more legumes, nuts and seeds with smaller portions of  lean proteins can support your immune system and overall health. Consider incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet. Foods like berries, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds are packed with antioxidants and nutrients that help combat cancer. Adding sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as flaxseeds and walnuts, can also be beneficial.
  • Exercise Regularly: Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and improve mental health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, such as walking, swimming, or yoga. Exercise can help regulate hormones and boost your immune system. Even simple activities like gardening or dancing can make a difference. Consider downloading a ‘step’ app which counts your goal in steps each day.
  • Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol Consumption: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are linked to an increased risk of cancer recurrence. Quitting smoking and moderating alcohol intake can significantly improve your health outcomes. Seek support groups or cessation programs if you need help quitting smoking or reducing alcohol intake. Today, thankfully there are many non-alcoholic alternatives on menus and available for purchase.  Celebrities are getting onboard and endorsing these products, making them more popular and thus available.

Managing stress and anxiety is crucial for breast cancer survivors. Mental health practices like meditation and mindfulness can be incredibly effective:

  • Incorporate Mindfulness and Meditation: Regular meditation and mindfulness practices can help you stay grounded and manage stress. Studies show that these practices can reduce anxiety, depression, and even physical pain. Set aside time each day for activities like deep breathing, guided meditation, or yoga. Apps like Headspace or Calm offer guided sessions that can help you get started. If you have a spiritual practice, prayer has been shown to boost immunity and offer peace that transcends understanding
  • Practice Deep Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing can help calm your mind and reduce stress. Try spending a few minutes each day focusing on your breath, inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth. Techniques such as the 4-7-8 breathing method can be particularly effective. One effective way to incorporate a few minutes of breath work is to set a timer on your phone to stop what you are doing (safely) and focus on the breath. It’s such an easy thing to do for our health but many times we need a gentle reminder.  This technique really works.
  • Seek Support from a Therapist, Coach or  Support Group: Talking about your fears with a mental health professional or joining a support group for breast cancer survivors can provide emotional support and practical advice. Sharing experiences with others who understand your journey can be incredibly comforting. Consider both in-person and online support groups to find the best fit for your needs.

Unfortunately, cancer is often associated with other types of diseases that can accompany it such as an onset of heart disease and type II diabetes among others.
